Ian O'Connell
Ian O'Connell, also known as Iain Andrew O'Connell, is an English former professional footballer and current football manager. Born on October 9, 1970, in Southend-on-Sea, he played primarily as a central defender.
Playing Career
O'Connell began his career with Southend United, signing professional terms in 1989 and making four appearances in the Football League during the 1989-90 season. After being released, he joined Dover Athletic, where he made over 250 appearances over seven years. He later transferred to Margate for a fee of £4,000 in 1997, contributing significantly with over 200 appearances and 19 goals. In December 2003, he signed with Chelmsford City but had previously declined an offer from them to remain at Margate.
Managerial Career
O'Connell transitioned into management in February 2005 when he became player-manager of Great Wakering Rovers. He retired from playing in the 2007-08 season to focus on his managerial role. After a brief stint at Margate as manager from February 2010 to March 2011, he returned to Great Wakering Rovers in February 2017 and led them to win the Essex Senior League title in the 2017-18 season. He resigned in July 2018 but returned to manage the club again in May 2022.
O'Connell's career reflects a strong commitment to both playing and managing at various levels of English football.
