Ian Campbell
Ian Campbell is a professional who has worked in maritime autonomy and surface warfare at DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory) since 2006.1 He joined DSTL in the early 1990s as an analyst in the above water domain, focusing on computer simulation modeling.1 Throughout his career, Campbell has worked in various domains including amphibious, special forces, and air, before settling into his current role in surface warfare.1
Campbell played a significant role in developing autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) technology. He collaborated with ASV, an SME at the time, to build an unmanned surface vehicle system capable of autonomous navigation.1 This work resulted in a baseline capability for intelligent standalone autonomous systems that could sense surroundings and avoid collisions.1
His efforts contributed to the development of technology that was later licensed through Ploughshare Innovations, leading to commercial applications.1 The autonomous systems developed by Campbell's team have found use in various fields, including being selected for implementation on an autonomous surface ship for the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).1
