Hugh Montgomery

Hugh Montgomery is a distinguished Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at University College London (UCL) and serves as the Director of the UCL Centre for Human Health and Performance.123 He graduated with a first-class degree in cardiorespiratory physiology and neuropharmacology from the University of London in 1984, followed by a medical degree in 1987.6 In 1997, he earned his MDRes, focusing on paracrine renin-angiotensin systems.5
Montgomery is renowned for his pioneering research in genetics, notably discovering the first gene associated with human fitness.16 He has published over 600 scientific papers, including several in prestigious journals like Nature and The Lancet.247 His research interests extend to environmental stressors, metabolism, and the impact of climate change on health.136
In addition to his academic and clinical roles, Montgomery is actively involved in climate change advocacy. He co-chairs the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change and has participated in several international climate negotiations.24 He also founded the non-profit organization Real Zero, aimed at climate action.5
Beyond his scientific endeavors, Montgomery is an award-winning author of children's books and thrillers, a public speaker, and has appeared in various media formats.45 He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2022 for his contributions to intensive care medicine and climate change advocacy.45
