This transition is characterized by greater attention to global interdependence, and a stronger focus on political, cultural, economic, environmental and technological developments that simultaneously affect several (or all) regions of the world. This course examines two of these interrelated issues: Migration & Identity Politics. We are in Paris, France. Therefore, we will focus on exploring how migratory patterns affect France’s domestic as well as foreign policies. In particular, we will analyze how France adapts to the idea of a “common European identity” in times of increasing migration within & into Europe. At the same time, we will analyze broader patterns in the world’s demographic development: We want to answer questions like: How and why does the distribution of the world’s population change? What explains different fertility and mortality rates in developed and developing countries? How do these developments shape economic, social and environmental policies? Finally, we want to try to understand why political actors make the choices they do, what is at stake in these choices, and what the implications of these choices are – in the short, medium and long term. For this, we need to understand historic as well as current political developments within countries (comparative politics) as well as between countries (international relations). International Conflict (INTL 4220, Summer 2010, Summer 2011)The purpose of this course is to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of theoretical frameworks, analytical tools, and vocabulary used in explaining causes and triggering mechanisms of interstate war. In addition to analyzing the conditions that make for war and peace between states we will examine the causal mechanisms behind other forms of militarized disputes including instances of ethnic conflict, global terrorism, civil war and genocide. We will use a wide range of case studies, covering over 2000 years of human history, to examine various explanations for war and peace, confrontation and collaboration.
