Heather Massey
Environmental Physiology researcher with a passion for teaching undergraduates - Podcaster - Open water swimmer
Heather Massey is a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Health and Exercise Science at the University of Portsmouth.12 She is a member of the Extreme Environments Laboratory and Clinical, Health and Rehabilitation Research Team (CHaRT).1 Dr. Massey specializes in environmental physiology, focusing on human responses to extreme environments such as hypoxia, heat, and cold.12

- Heat illness and acclimation
- Effects of extreme environmental conditions on physiology and pathophysiology1
Dr. Massey teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules in physiology, including Environmental Physiology and Humans in Extreme Environments.1 She is also involved in supervising PhD students and mentoring early career female academics.1
Outside of academia, Heather Massey is an accomplished open water swimmer, having completed solo swims of the English Channel and Lake Windermere.1 She is actively involved in promoting safe practices within outdoor swimming communities and serves as a Trustee for a local organization supporting people with additional needs in outdoor swimming activities.1
