Hal Kamine
Founder and CEO Do Good Foods and KDC Sustainable Infrastructure
Professional Background
Hal Kamine is a distinguished entrepreneur and executive whose extensive career has revolved around the development, management, and innovation in various energy and telecommunications sectors. As the CEO and owner of Kamine Development Corp., Hal has made a significant impact in the power generation industry, responsible for the development and ownership of seven unregulated non-utility power generation projects in New York and New Jersey from 1982 to 2000. These projects collectively generated a remarkable 600 megawatts of energy and involved a capital investment exceeding $800 million. Hal played a pioneering role in the independent power business, contributing to its evolution from its inception in the early 1980s until the turn of the century.
Recognizing early on the transformative power of deregulation, Hal was deeply engaged in the industry's changes concerning electricity and natural gas. His keen foresight led him to venture into telecommunications in 1995, establishing KMC Telecom. The company began as a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) prior to the landmark passage of the Telecom Act of 1996. This act catalyzed the creation of a competitive marketplace, allowing Hal's vision for a tailored telecom service company to flourish. KMC Telecom rapidly grew to boast over $2 billion in capital investment, a dedicated workforce of 1,500 employees, and annual revenues approximating $600 million. It became one of the largest independent CLECs in the nation, successfully constructing a national data platform that managed one-third of the U.S. dial-up services until its sale in 2005, with the data platform—known as Hypercube—being sold in 2013.
In 2009, Hal, together with his two sons, Matt and Justin, co-founded KDC Solar. This initiative represented a pivotal shift toward sustainable energy, deploying approximately $400 million and establishing itself as one of the largest owners and operators of net-metered solar projects on the East Coast, with over 125 megawatts of operational capacity before its sale in 2019. The Kamine family’s commitment to sustainability continued with the inception of KDC™ Ag in 2016. This company addresses the critical issue of food waste by converting surplus supermarket fresh food leftovers into animal feed and pet food on an infrastructure scale.
Today, Hal, along with Matt and Justin, is dedicated to expanding KDC™ into numerous large-scale infrastructure projects aimed at promoting sustainability, which includes initiatives centered around reducing and recycling waste materials, such as paper and cardboard, and advancing the production of carbon-negative concrete.
