Greg Block was the founder and Board Chair of First Step Staffing, a nonprofit organization he established in 2007 in Atlanta, Georgia. His mission was to provide employment opportunities for homeless individuals, those with criminal records, and struggling veterans, helping them achieve self-sufficiency and dignity through work. Block's innovative approach involved acquiring for-profit staffing agencies and converting them into nonprofit operations, significantly expanding First Step's reach and impact over the years.123
Before founding First Step, Block had a successful career in the textile industry and even worked for the CIA for four years. His passion for helping others was deeply rooted in his upbringing, which emphasized civil service and community leadership. After selling his textile business, he dedicated himself to addressing homelessness, focusing on providing jobs rather than just temporary solutions like shelter and food.234
Tragically, Greg Block was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer in 2013, but he continued to work tirelessly for First Step until his death in August 2020. Under his leadership, First Step Staffing grew from serving a few hundred individuals to over 1,500 clients weekly, with significant financial growth as well.136 His legacy continues through the ongoing operations of First Step, which has helped thousands of people find employment and rebuild their lives.25
