Gerardo Berthin
Director Latin America and Caribbean Programs at Freedom House
Gerardo Berthin is currently the Vice President of International Programs at Freedom House.12 He previously served as the Director of Latin America and Caribbean Programs at Freedom House from July 2020 to November 2021.2
Berthin has extensive experience in democratic governance, anti-corruption, human rights, and civil society strengthening, having worked in over 50 countries across various regions.1 He holds two master's degrees: one in Political Science from the University of Chicago and another in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University. He also has a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from George Washington University.12
Throughout his career, Berthin has held several notable positions:
- Senior Associate at Tetra Tech's Democracy and Governance sector (2014-2020)
- Governance and Decentralization Policy Advisor at UNDP (2009-2014)
- Deputy Director/Senior Governance Adviser at Casals & Associates, Inc. (2002-2009)
- Manager/Technical Adviser at UNDP in Bulgaria (1999-2001)
Berthin is an accomplished author, having written two books on political development and democracy, co-authored three books on democratic governance, and published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed social science journals.1 He is also certified as a trainer from the United Nations Staff College and holds a certificate from Harvard University's J.F.K School of Government on Leadership in Development.12
