George Q. Daley, MD, PhD

George Q. Daley, MD, PhD is the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, a position he has held since January 2017.13 He is also the Caroline Shields Walker Professor of Medicine and Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School.6
Dr. Daley is an internationally recognized leader in stem cell science and cancer biology.6 He earned his bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Harvard in 1982, his PhD in biology from MIT in 1989 (working with Nobel laureate David Baltimore), and his MD summa cum laude from Harvard Medical School in 1991.25
His research focuses on stem cells, cancer, and blood disorders.5 Some of his important contributions include:
- Creating customized stem cells to treat genetic immune deficiency in a mouse model
- Generating disease-specific pluripotent stem cells by direct reprogramming of human fibroblasts
- Demonstrating the role of the LIN28/let-7 pathway in cancer
- Showing the central role of the BCR/ABL oncoprotein in human chronic myelogenous leukemia, which provided critical target validation for the development of Gleevec2
Dr. Daley has held numerous prestigious positions, including:
- Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (2008-2017)
- Director of the Stem Cell Transplantation Program at Boston Children's Hospital (2009-2016)
- President of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (2007-2008)15
He is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Association of Arts and Sciences.4 Dr. Daley has received several awards, including the NIH Director's Pioneer Award and the E. Donnall Thomas Prize of the American Society of Hematology.5
As of March 2025, Dr. Daley continues to lead Harvard Medical School, overseeing a community of nearly 12,000 faculty members, 1,450 staff, and over 10,000 students and trainees.3
