    Gary Matkin

    University of California, Dean of Continuing Education and Vice Provost of Career Pathways

    Gary W. Matkin, Ph.D., has been the Dean of Continuing Education at University of California, Irvine since March 1, 2000.

    He also oversees the university's Open Learning Initiative and has been appointed as the Vice Provost for Career Pathways for the Division of Career Pathways (DCP) since October 2017.

    Dr. Matkin manages a combined budget of $45 million for the Division of Continuing Education and the Open Learning Initiative, offering 2,400 courses annually to around 50,000 students.

    Under his leadership, several community programs such as the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute have been set up.

    The UCI Open Initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Matkin, has a wide reach, engaging millions of learners each year through open education channels and massive open online courses (MOOCs).

    The Division of Career Pathways (DCP) provides comprehensive services to UCI's 33,000 students to assist them in finding successful careers post-graduation.

    Before joining UCI, Dr. Matkin served as the associate dean of University Extension at UC Berkeley, focusing on instructional technology initiatives, including online courses and technology-assisted distance education programs.

    Dr. Matkin holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of San Francisco, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Education from UC Berkeley. He is also a Certified Public Accountant.

    As an accomplished author, Dr. Matkin has written three books on various educational and financial topics related to continuing education and technology transfer.

    He has contributed significantly to the field through numerous articles and papers on subjects like continuing education, distance learning, open education, technology transfer, university-based economic development, and alternative digital credentials.
