Gary Kamiya

Gary Kamiya is a renowned author, journalist, and historian based in San Francisco. He is the author of multiple critically-acclaimed books, including 'Shadow Knights: The Secret War Against Hitler' and 'Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco,' which won the 2013 Northern California Book Award in Creative Nonfiction.

His latest book, 'Spirits of San Francisco: Voyages Through the Unknown City,' has been a bestseller in northern California since its release in October 2020. Kamiya's prominent history column, 'Portals of the Past,' is featured bi-weekly in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Beyond his books and columns, Kamiya's work has been published in prestigious publications such as the New York Times Book Review, The Atlantic, Sports Illustrated, and ArtForum. He co-founded and served as the executive editor of Salon.com, where he covered diverse topics ranging from the Middle East and Olympics to politics, music, and art.

Additionally, Kamiya held the position of executive editor at San Francisco Magazine for five years, focusing on critical issues like homelessness, addiction, technology companies' impact on the city, and land use and development.
