Joseph Klimavicz is a seasoned executive with a distinguished 37-year career in the US government, where he led large-scale and complex technology transformations. He is recognized for his ability to integrate business objectives with technology's role in driving innovation, competitive differentiation, and customer service. He was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the US Department of Justice from May 2014 to February 2020, where he oversaw the Department's information and technology programs. He also served as the CIO and Director, High Performance Computing and Communications at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from January 2007 until May 2014. Klimavicz began his career as an imagery scientist at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and subsequently held line management positions at the CIA and the Department of Defense (DOD), including Deputy CIO for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). Klimavicz earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Tech in 1983, and a Master of Engineering degree from Virginia Tech in 1988, with a focus on geodesy, photogrammetry, and imaging systems. In 2012, he received the U.S. Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Executive Service, the highest honor attainable for federal government work. Currently, Klimavicz serves as the Managing Director at KPMG.
