Fred Middleton is an accomplished biotechnology and biomedical industry veteran with over 35 years of experience. He has a vast and varied career path, from managing director at Sanderling Ventures to the chairman and CEO of ViaCyte Inc. Mr. Middleton graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and obtained his MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School.

With a strong background in the biotech industry, Mr. Middleton co-founded Sanderling Ventures with Dr. Robert McNeil in 1987, raising institutional venture capital to invest in early-stage biomedical companies. He has served as an investor, management team member, and director in over 25 new biomedical ventures built in Sanderling's venture investment portfolios since 1988. Sanderling has raised and invested over $1.1 Billion in start-up capital investments since 1979.

Prior to Sanderling, Mr. Middleton worked with the biotechnology pioneer Genentech, where he served in various capacities, including Vice President of Finance, Corporate Development, Chief Financial Officer, and President of Genentech Development Corporation. He was also the founder of Morgan Stanley Ventures and served as Managing General Partner of a partnership making technology investments.
