During this period of exploration, research, and reflection, I am working on long term projects in phototherapy, auto-ethnography, and the performance of rural masculinities. Rethinking my photographic practices on Belfast School of Art's world-leading MFA Degree in Photography. The Belfast School of Art strives to develop unique photographic voices, which sit firmly at the cutting-edge of a contemporary international context, while also mining the specifics of its unique geographical and cultural position.Profiled by the British Journal of Photography as one of the most significant photography schools in Europe. Working internationally between the book, gallery, web, and magazine, continually challenging photography’s place within contemporary society and the way we photograph now.The teaching team is comprised of contemporary practicing photographers, writers, and thinkers who exhibit and publish internationally. These are Professor Paul Seawright, Ailbhe Greaney, Dr. KayLynn Deveney, Ken Grant, and Hayley Morris-Cafiero, as well as members of the prestigious Magnum agency, such as Donovan Wylie. A program of Guest Lecturers, recently including Hannah Starkey, Guy Martin, Mark Neville, and Donald Weber can often be seen adding to the wealth of opportunities. Throughout the program, development in awareness of photography as it exists in a culture of evolving technologies is very much part of the academic and practical landscape. Regularly challenged to rethink practice both visually, theoretically and contextually.My research and visual practice are founded on over a decade of my own life of unraveling the thorny question of 'how men work'. Based on the studies of hegemony and the performance of masculinities in a rural landscape, my homegrown studies are now receiving the support and momentum at this prestigious university and school of art in Belfast, by exploring masculinities through photography, literature and sculpture.

With a working title of The International Screen School of Manchester, the building is aiming to be completed and ready to open its doors by late 2021. Offering an imaginative and inspirational lecturer and enrichment programme, motivating, nurturing and supporting the students of MMU in producing excellent outcomes through innovative methods; with an in depth technical knowledge and understanding of the sector; embracing the full potential of new ways of directing under and postgraduates out of higher education and embracing the wider creative arena.Recently I have been working with the Film Dept of MSA piloting a cohort of 3rd year BA Film students to assist in them running their own Production Company. This resulted in a well received and critically acclaimed Film Festival at HOME, Manchester and has allowed them to prove and hone their production and directional skills. Developing collaborative work within the cohorts and allowing them first hand experience with curatorial and developmental areas of producing photography as a commercial art form has encouraged many graduates to focus on what their creative voice is and successfully achieve industry and gallery attention.  I think we, as working Photographers have the responsibility to transmit our knowledge and experience to photographers who want to become professionals or to improve their skills in order to be able to take their turn to convey their vision of the world.

My initial studios were built out of a neglected property in the badlands of Salford, near Manchester. The studios served to supply both excellent service & well equipped commercial studio hire, offering c.5000sq ft over two floors. It offered an independent or combined space scenario with excellent in house catering, lighting and camera equipment hire for both stills and motion capture. With over twenty years of experience in Film, Broadcast and Photography, no job was too big, or too small.I created a diversity lab to focus exclusively on closing the gender gap and widening diversity in the creative field for those with dyslexia, dyscalculia and high functioning ASD; growing looks with the local Colleges and High Schools. The Lab experimented with unique and innovative ways to recruit and retain diverse talent through the use of data, behavioural, and design-thinking.The Lab's hallmark beta project – the “Out House” celebrated the abilities of all young creatives in and around Manchester proving that taking studio and production “in house” was not always a successful way to expand an established business.  It was the first “Returnship” ever launched in any creative enterprise in the city.To inspire others to experiment and innovate, the Lab partnered with Manchester Metropolitan University to allow anyone interested in the field of commercial photography and the art of photography, in which 54 private sector and four councils worked together to generate ideas that increased the retention and advancement of the craft in the region. The Lab’s work featured in acquiring the London 2012 Team GB Campaign and a memorable number of globally recognised campaigns for other world sporting events and consumer brands such as Nike and Proctor&Gamble. To achieve such immersive and important contracts allowed the students to experience a live commercial campaign from pre-production, to post; to delivery.I have featured in, The NY Times, FOAM Press, BJP, & The Guardian.

ArtObscura has been quietly evolving since being established in 2006 to deliver Arts Council England’s Creative Partnerships programme across the Midlands, North West, with aspirations to roll out across wider UK.Creative Partnerships was England’s flagship creative learning programme, designed to develop the skills of children and young people across England, raising their aspirations, achievements and life chances.  As part of a national network of Area Delivery Organisations, ArtObscura worked in partnership with 10 primary and secondary schools; 400 teachers and school leaders, bringing creative workers such as artists, poets, choreographers and scientists into schools to work with teachers to inspire young people and help them learn.The government announced its plans to withdraw funding for the Creative Partnerships programme from the end of the academic year 2010/2011 forcing me to re-think the future.  Remaining true to my founding vision, mission and beliefs, I began to study further the impact of creativity and cross curricular methodologies, with research and delivery models at the forefront of a wider portfolio of programmes designed to enhance and extend the impact of creativity in schools.With over thirty years’ experience of working in the arts, I am passionately committed to developing the capacity of young people to realise their creative potential and tirelessly campaigned to place culture and creativity at the heart of learning and community renewal. Taking it as I did to Parliament in 2010 and 2013, I am actively developing digital and analogue resources to support and reinforce teachers and students throughout primary and secondary (K-12) education.
