Engineering Manager

<a href="http://Derby.com">Derby.com</a> is a regulated, fun, and social way to gamble with real money on horse races for residents of the US and Canada. As the technical co-founder, I was 100% hands-on creating our initial products before growing the technology team in NYC and later adding an overseas engineering office. Key contributions include:▪ Launched an MVP of our first product, <a href="http://DerbyJackpot.com">DerbyJackpot.com</a>, in 6 months, before moving on to create many more products for the web, mobile web, and iOS.▪ Grew team to include backend, frontend, and iOS engineers, with very little attrition. The team worked in an agile manner with daily stand-ups, CI, and multiple production deployments each day.▪ The platform has processed over 100MM in transactions and was the first regulated gambling app in the iOS App Store, the first to accept PayPal, and the first to accept BitCoin.▪ Lead the architecture of our API and AWS infrastructure to handle 1000s of requests/sec during peak events, such as the Kentucky Derby. Point of contact for all production issues.▪ Worked closely with product, customer service, marketing, and finance to ensure new features met their expectations and discuss potential issues before they became problems.▪ Helped the company spin off a separate entity, Gold Games, to focus on mobile free to play casino games (check out 'Racetrack Slots' on iOS!).Tech Stack: Rails, Redis, and Postgres for our API. Sinatra and WebSockets for our real-time data feed and chat. Backbone.js, CoffeeScript, and HTML5/CSS for our web products. Objective-C and later Unity for native apps. AWS with Docker, ECS, RDS, and Terraform for our production environment.

Lead the development of multiple applications from reporting to mobile, all driven in an agile process. Used a variety of open source, Microsoft, and iOS technologies. Key contributions include:▪ Managed overall technical architecture and all outside contractors.▪ Developed a corporate wide reporting platform that enabled real time revenue reporting and forecasting for all hotels in our global chain. The system provided complete visibility for any metric to virtually all 500+ employees, replacing hundreds of manual and processes.▪ Created a secure public RESTful API with JSON and XML endpoints for both internal and external applications to surface our guest, sales, and financial data.▪ Built an internally distributed iPad application for our VIP membership club sales staff. The application highlighted club benefits, images and promotional videos, membership levels, and communicated with our public API for all data needs.

Architect, developer, and project manager for a variety of companies:▪ Pump Audio: Built a platform to generate PDF contracts online for musicians to sign, replacing a long and error prone process process.▪ Undertone Networks: Created a complete business intelligence solution based on mySql, Perl, and SQL Reporting Services. The system replaced hundreds of spreadsheets, automating billing and advertiser campaign management.▪ Managed a team developers and designers migrating a large e-commerce and community site from classic ASP to .NET. Worked with business owners on initial specification and all phases of development.

Development lead of an e-commerce and promotions platform integrated with various peer to peer file sharing networks. Company was purchased by Nokia. Key contributions include:▪ Worked closely with senior management to define project scope, requirements, timelines, and quickly create prototypes to support sales initiatives.▪ Created a highly scalable e-commerce platform for DRM enabled song downloads using various .NET technologies. Using a template-based architecture based on custom <a href="http://ASP.NET">ASP.NET</a> server controls, product managers were given complete UI control without utilizing IT resources.▪ Installed, monitored, and maintained all software on production servers related to the online music store.

Designed and developed significant portions of the online personals platform.  Company was purchased by FriendFinder, Inc.  Key contributions include:▪ Development lead for an application architecture that efficiently supported over 200 partners across 3 major versions and multiple revisions.▪ Designed and implemented a robust search system to efficiently match millions of user profiles based on over 30 pieces of user defined criteria.▪ Designed, developed, and tested a SOAP based payment platform consumed by both Linux and Windows based clients.  Processing over $3 million per year, the system supported multiple payment processors and foreign currency.▪ Designed and implemented an AJAX based real-time multi-user chat application.  Usage tripled over the previous version, significantly boosting revenue.▪ Managed the development process for both major and bug fix releases.  Coordinated all software releases with Product Management, QA, and Operations teams.

Spring Street Networks

Principal Software Engineer

Team lead for one the largest and most visited network of music sites on the web.  Key contributions include:▪ Managed the site architecture, including software design, web server configurations, performance tuning, and capacity planning. One of four responsible for assuring <a href="http://Rollingstone.com">Rollingstone.com</a> ran 24x7.▪ Developed web services for user authentication and registration, syncing user databases across multiple web sites under different platforms preventing a costly move to one database platform.▪ Architected and lead 3 teams in a full system redesign with a focus on system performance using various Microsoft technologies. Performance increased three-fold, extending the life of the current hardware. The project later became a Microsoft case study.▪ Designed a search service to efficiently search millions of pieces of content and provide a seamless method of integration on partner sites. Searches were served in under a half second and additional partner traffic significantly boosted ad revenue.

RollingStone.com

Lead Software Engineer

Key contributions:▪ Developed an XML/XSL driven content system to aggregate all content assets from various SQL databases.  Using templates, the editorial team had greater control of page design which relieved programmers from frequent custom development.▪ Built a message boards system to share across all sites in the network, replacing an expensive and difficult to manage third party solution.  Multiple front ends were placed on COM components, allowing each site to have their own look and feel.
