Clarence Chio
Clarence Chio is a highly accomplished computer scientist and security professional with an impressive background in academia, industry, and entrepreneurship. He is a lecturer and faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches Applied Machine Learning to graduate students in the MICS/MIDS program. He is also a published author with O'Reilly Media, having written the book "Machine Learning & Security" in 2018. Additionally, he is a co-founder of DEF CON AI Village, a community for AI and machine learning enthusiasts and professionals that has gained enormous popularity at DEF CON conferences.
Before his academic career, Chio worked as a Senior Software Engineer and Security Researcher at Shape Security, a startup focused on defending websites and mobile applications from automated attacks. Prior to that, he held several software engineering roles at companies such as Zazzle and SanDisk®, where he developed a broad range of technical and programming skills.
Outside of his professional work, Chio is an active member of the tech community and has involved himself in various public policy initiatives in Singapore, where he grew up. He is a former Public Policy Specialist for the Ministry of Community Development Youth and Sports, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he helped to develop policies to enhance public safety and community development.
Today, Chio is the CTO and co-founder of Unit21, a financial technology startup that employs machine learning and data analysis to detect and prevent fraud for finance and e-commerce companies. His expertise in machine learning, security, entrepreneurship, and public policy makes him an outstanding resource for anyone seeking to innovate and advance these fields.
