    Erin Bertrand

    Assistant Professor

Dr. Erin Bertrand is a marine scientist who has made significant contributions to the field of oceanography and marine microbiology. She completed her PhD in Chemical Oceanography from the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in February 2012, with her thesis focusing on insights into vitamin B12 metabolism in marine microbes.3 After her doctoral studies, Dr. Bertrand worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the J. Craig Venter Institute in California.14

During her time at the J. Craig Venter Institute, Dr. Bertrand was involved in research that uncovered complex relationships among marine microbes and their competition for resources such as iron, light, and vitamin B12 in the Southern Ocean.4 This work provided new insights into the microbial interactions underpinning highly productive ecosystems and the regulation of phytoplankton blooms.

Currently, Dr. Bertrand is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Marine Microbial Proteomics at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.1 Her research focuses on connecting molecular-level processes with global-scale implications in marine ecosystems. Dr. Bertrand's work continues to explore the physiological and biochemical aspects of marine microbial activity and their influence on major biogeochemical processes in the ocean.2

Outside of her research, Dr. Bertrand enjoys running on Nova Scotia trails and listening to live music in Halifax.1
