Eric Wilson
Founder and CEO Xinja Bank
Eric Wilson is the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Xinja Bank, an Australian neobank that was established in 2017. Under his leadership, Xinja aimed to disrupt traditional banking by offering a fully digital banking experience tailored to customer needs. The bank received its full banking license from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) in 2019, making it one of the first neobanks in Australia to achieve this status.45
Wilson's vision for Xinja was to create a banking environment that leveraged technology to help customers manage their finances more effectively. He emphasized the importance of trust in banking, especially following the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry in Australia.4 His approach involved focusing on customer-centric services and innovative financial products, such as prepaid cards and a money management app, which were designed to appeal to a broad demographic.34
Despite initial success and significant capital raising efforts, including a notable A$433 million investment from World Investments, Xinja faced challenges due to market saturation and complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2020, the company announced it would return its banking license and cease operations as a bank, pivoting instead to focus on fintech services.125 Wilson resigned from his position as CEO in July 2021, marking the end of his direct involvement with the company.12
Today, Xinja operates under a new business model that emphasizes technology services for other fintech companies rather than direct banking services. Wilson's legacy at Xinja remains significant as he played a crucial role in pioneering digital banking solutions in Australia.12
