We build and implement aggressive public affairs strategies including communications preparation, rapid response and opposition framing. Recognized by Politico as the strategist “White House officials turn to in a crisis to handle communications,” Schultz advised President Obama, spoke on behalf of the Administration on Air Force One and in the White House briefing room, and helped manage the Administration’s proactive messaging and news-of-the-day responses. Schultz led the public rollout of Chief Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

Schultz was originally hired at the White House in 2011 to respond to oversight investigations including the Solyndra bankruptcy, the Justice Department’s Fast and Furious operation, the attacks in Benghazi, and the uproar over alleged political targeting at the IRS.

Associate Communications Director

Schultz served as communications director for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2010, retaining Senate control for Democrats despite an historic Republican wave. Schultz provided hands-on messaging, debate preparation, and rapid response support—including efforts to quickly and aggressively define opponents—to campaigns in 18 competitive states. In this role, Schultz became “well-known among Washington reporters for his aggressive, behind-the-scenes approach,” as noted by Politico.

Communications Director

Schultz served as Deputy Campaign Manager for Al Franken’s 2008 Senate race. According to the Washington Post, Schultz brought “order and discipline” to Franken’s campaign, working closely with the consultant team on television spots, direct mail, and an aggressive press strategy that kept a favored incumbent opponent on defense and sank his approval ratings. During a high profile recount, Schultz worked directly with the chief counsel to devise messaging that augmented the campaign’s legal strategy.

Schultz spent several years on Capitol Hill working for a number of U.S. Senators, including now Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) where he developed strategies for policy issues including Supreme Court nominations, China currency manipulation, the U.S. Attorneys firings scandal, and the CIA leak investigation. As communications director, Schultz raised Schumer’s national profile while maximizing visibility in each of New York’s media markets.
