Emily Smith

On loan to UNESCO/IOC/Global Ocean Observing System

Emily Smith is a dedicated Program Manager in NOAA's Ocean Observing and Monitoring Division with a strong background in marine biology and education.

With a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography from Louisiana State University, a Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Secondary Education and Teaching from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Marine Biology from the University of Southern Mississippi, Emily has a well-rounded educational foundation.

Throughout her career, Emily has served in various roles including Research Associate at Mote Marine Laboratory, RA-3 at Louisiana State University, and Middle School Science Teacher at Dayton City School and Hamilton County Department of Education.

In her current role at NOAA, Emily manages projects supporting the US Argo Program, the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) network, gliders in boundary currents, and ocean heat content products. She is involved in strategic planning for observing systems and budget management.

Emily also takes on the role of Adopt a Drifter Coordinator, where she connects schools in the US with international schools to track drifting buoys and utilize real-time data in classrooms.
