Emily Lovell
Computer Science Researcher & Educator
Emily Lovell is a computer scientist and educator with a diverse academic background.14 She completed her undergraduate studies at UC Santa Cruz, earning a B.A. in Computer Science.1 Lovell then pursued graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she obtained an M.S. in Media Arts and Sciences from the MIT Media Lab.15
During her time at MIT, Lovell was a research assistant in the High-Low Tech research group at the Media Lab, focusing on craft and technology.35 Her master's thesis, titled "A Soft Circuit Curriculum to Promote Technological Self-Efficacy," explored the intersection of technology and crafting.6
After her time at MIT, Lovell returned to UC Santa Cruz to complete her Ph.D. in Computer Science, which she earned in 2021.14 Currently, she is a postdoctoral fellow in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at UC Santa Cruz, where she focuses on open source software contribution and teaching open source as a way to support broader participation in computing.1
Lovell's research interests include computing education, e-textiles, computational craft, and teaching open source.2 She has published numerous papers on topics such as DIY learning, interactive spaces, and promoting constructive mindsets in computer science education.2
