Ellen Steinberg
Creative Director, Branding Consultant
Ellen Steinberg is the curator of The Sid Show, an exhibition showcasing the artwork of her late father, Sid Steinberg.1 As the youngest of Sid Steinberg's children, Ellen inherited much of her father's artistic talent and was tasked with managing his extensive collection of commercial artwork after his passing in 2009.12
Background and Inspiration
Ellen Steinberg is a branding consultant by profession.1 After her father's death, she found herself in possession of boxes filled with his iconic commercial artwork, which had been stored in his office. Initially, these works were simply stored in her closet, unsorted.1
Over time, Ellen began sharing pieces of her father's work with visiting friends. She noticed the positive reactions - smiles, laughter, and appreciation for the beauty of the art. This inspired her to create The Sid Show, as a way to share her father's legacy with a wider audience.1
The Sid Show
The Sid Show is a curated exhibition that tells a story of family, love, and humor through Sid Steinberg's diverse body of work.1 It features:
- Commercial artwork
- Logo designs
- Illustrations
- Hand-typed self-promotion postcards
- A collection of cards Sid made for his wife over their 53-year marriage
Ellen used innovative methods to display her father's work, including creating a bathroom installation using Spoonflower wallpaper to showcase one of Sid's signature pieces - a painted bathroom door from their family home.1
Impact and Reception
The exhibition has been well-received, with visitors experiencing a range of emotions from tears to laughter. Ellen found the process of sharing her father's work to be more meaningful and poignant than she had anticipated, observing how it positively affected people's emotional states and fostered connections among viewers.1
The first iteration of The Sid Show was held at Cassilhaus, beginning in late January 2020.34 Ellen's curation of this lifetime retrospective of her father's work has been recognized as a significant milestone for the venue.4
