Ellen Hwang

Ellen Hwang is a highly accomplished professional with experience in program direction, innovation management, and community development in diverse organizations.

Hwang earned a B.A. in English and an M.S. in Community and Regional Planning from Temple University, and graduated from Wissahickon High School. She worked as a Marketing and Pharmtech Intern at PMC Pharmacy before beginning her career in community development. Hwang served as Program Coordinator and Manager at the Asian Arts Initiative before joining the City of Philadelphia as Program Manager for Innovation Management, then as Smart City Director and Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives. Her many achievements at the City of Philadelphia included leading Philly Innovates, a city-wide innovation management program that involved over 30 city departments, and successfully deploying the SmartCityPHL roadmap.

In her current role as Program Director at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Hwang oversees initiatives and programs that seek to improve cities and communities across the country. Her work is characterized by visionary thinking, inclusive engagement, and a commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
