Elisabeth Steiner

Elisabeth Steiner is a prominent Austrian jurist and legal expert, currently serving as the Deputy President of the Appeals Arbitration Division at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) since May 1, 2019. She is also a Vice President of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and has a distinguished background in international law and human rights.
Education and Early Career
Born on March 21, 1956, in Vienna, Austria, Steiner studied law and business administration at the University of Vienna, earning her Doctorate in Law in 1981 and a Doctorate in Business Administration in 1985. She was admitted to the Austrian Bar in 1987 and practiced law independently for nearly two decades before her judicial career began.13
Judicial Experience
In 2001, Steiner was elected as a Judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg, where she served until 2015. During her tenure, she was appointed Vice-President of the ECHR's First Section from 2011 to 2015. Her work at the ECHR included significant contributions to human rights law and advocacy for women's rights globally.123
Professional Contributions
After retiring from the ECHR, Steiner returned to private practice as an attorney at Lansky, Ganzger + Partner in Vienna. Her legal expertise extends to various fields, including human rights and international arbitration. She has also lectured at prestigious institutions worldwide, including Stanford University and the University of Hong Kong.13
Steiner's notable achievements include securing compensation for over 320,000 forced laborers from World War II and co-negotiating the Washington Agreement in 2001, which established a legal framework for reparations related to wartime injustices.13
