Professor | New Media Artist
Edrex Fontanilla is an Associate Professor in the Division of Mass Communication at St. John's University. He holds an MFA in Digital Language Arts, an MA in Music, and a BA in Visual Art, all from Brown University. His academic focus includes emergent forms in aesthetic computation, animation, and inscription, as well as sound art and multimedia composition.1
Prior to his current position, Fontanilla was an Assistant Professor at Marymount Manhattan College, where he established an Innovation Lab and taught integrated digital media courses. His teaching interests encompass physical computing, playable media, and emerging technologies, emphasizing socially responsible expression and reflective practices that encourage students to develop their own voices.12
Fontanilla's research merges sculptural and computational methods to investigate themes of perception, materiality, and temporality, exploring the material characteristics of hybrid media to reveal new forms of authorship.1 He teaches various courses related to game development and production, including "Introduction to Game Development" and "Principles of Game Design" among others.1
