Associate Appeals Counsel at United Nations

I worked as an international criminal lawyer, at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR), in the Office of the Prosecutor, as an Associate Appeals Counsel.  The UNICTR's Prosecution office is mandated to prosecute persons most responsible for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, committed against the Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.
During my tenure as an associate appeals counsel, I drafted substantial parts of the Office of the Prosecutor's written and oral submissions in response to the appeal of one of the accused in the largest multi-accused case of the ICTR.
I also participated in substantial multiple projects.  I participated in the drafting of a best practices manual for the prosecution of sexual violence crimes in post-conflict regions released by the OTP/ICTR in 2014 and training programs aimed at the judiciary, law enforcement representatives, prosecutors, NGOs and members of civil societies in the Great Lakes region on how to best prevent and prosecute the aforementioned crimes.

Associate Appeals Counsel

As an associate in the International arbitration practice, I worked on a number of high-profile investor-State and commercial arbitrations involving strategic economic and political interests in the public and private sectors of various jurisdictions.
Among other, I represented the following clients with other members of the arbitration team:
o  The majority shareholders in the former Yukos Oil Company as Claimants in arbitration proceedings against the Russian Federation in relation to claims of expropriation under the Energy Charter Treaty. The Arbitral Tribunal ordered the Russian Federation to pay over USD 50 billion in damages to the Claimants – the largest arbitral award ever rendered by a tribunal.
o  The French Government in an amicus curiae brief filed before the United States Supreme Court in Morrison v. National Australia Bank.
o  Lead American and European pharmaceutical companies in relation to the alleged infringement of patent rights and competition law.
o  A North American biotech company as Respondent in an arbitration before the ICC in Paris initiated by two European biotech companies.
o  Three European chemical companies in a series of ICC arbitrations in Paris, Geneva, and London against the European subsidiaries of a large North American chemical concern.
o  A Western African State in a dispute under the auspices of the ICSID Arbitration Rules against a consortium of investors alleging expropriation.
