I wanted to play Minecraft with my friends, and also learn more about Google Cloud Platform. To do this, I deployed a high-performance, cost-effective Minecraft hosted in GCP.

I created two VMs, one as a host for tools, the other (more powerful) hosting the Minecraft server. 

I used a Traefik to setup a reverse-proxy that directs players to the Minecraft server. SSL certificates are correctly generated and applied. Automatic DNS renewal updates when the external-IP address changes.

I implemented monitoring using Prometheus, cAdvisor, and Grafana. Thanks to a plugin, metrics from Minecraft are also exported - provided by an open source project to which I contributed.

To save costs, I created a script to automatically turn the Minecraft server off if no players are active. A Google Cloud Function can be used by players to bring the VM back online.

I set up NFS to share files between the two VMs.

I used NGINX is used to host a dynamic map of the Minecraft world, that is available even when the Minecraft server is offline.
