With a dedication to medical leadership, Dr. Mayer served as one of the Command Physicians during the Pentagon Rescue Operation on September 11, 2001. His team at Inova Fairfax Hospital successfully diagnosed and treated inhalational anthrax victims during the 2001 anthrax crisis.
