Emphysema.orgOur organization was founded in 1979 when we set out to fight for every breath of those suffering with emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. COPD makes breathing difficult for the 16 million Americans who have been diagnosed this disease. It is estimated another 12-15 million more people suffer from COPD, but have not been diagnosed and are not being treated. Today, EFA is working to increase awareness and promote early diagnosis of emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as the causes, treatment and lack of research funding devoted to these chronic lung ailments. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the world with three million lives lost to COPD in 2016, including 155,041 Americans. Our organization began in 1903 when we set out to fight tuberculosis (TB), then the most feared disease in the world. Over the past 117 years our mission has broadened, and today we are committed to making sure that one day everyone will be free of lung disease.  We provide educational programs for children and families on environmental health, tobacco prevention, and vaping prevention. We also conduct; patient support programs for families whose children have asthma, lung health screenings for adults, local and statewide advocacy on clean air and lung health issues, research on lung diseases and air pollution, and community education on COVID-19, wildfire smoke, and other lung health issues.
