The Alumni & Student Advisory Council (ASAC) is Relay's principal student and alumni organization. ASAC has the unique pleasure of combining both our alumni and student council to bridge connections and build community. As we engage in national feedback and decision-making on policies and activities affecting the Relay community in the council, we find it valuable and important that it comes from both perspectives.

 
The primary purpose of the council is to work towards the continuous improvement of the institution by:

- Soliciting students’ opinions and input on programs and practices at the institution.
- Organizing and sponsoring social, cultural, civic, and academic events to improve the quality of life for graduate students
- Fostering student interaction across identity markers, disciplines, and campuses, and 
- Facilitating communication between graduate students and the administration.

• Supervise and support first-year teacher development of lesson planning and execution, teaching strategies, and classroom management through weekly observations and debriefs, data analysis meetings, and lesson planning reviews.

• 100% of corps members selected either "agree" or "strongly agree" that their instructional skills improved as a result of direct coaching and feedback from their Corps Member Advisor on the End-Of-Institute survey.

•  As a Saturday Academy mathematics tutor, I provided critical academic support to scholars in 3rd and 4th grades who are on the cusp of or below their respective grade levels. This extra intervention allows scholars much-needed time to better understand and master essential skills in mathematics.

The NYC Civic Corps, an AmeriCorps program run by NYC Service - Office of the Mayor of New York, unites a diverse group of professionals to serve full-time with partner organizations, working to increase their organizational capacity to engage volunteers and build sustainable volunteer initiatives. I served my one-year commitment at buildOn. 

buildOn breaks the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. Our mission is to enhance education and empower youth in the U.S. to make a positive difference in their communities while helping people of developing countries increase their self-reliance through education.

As a Program Coordinator at buildOn, I coordinated and managed weekly community service projects for high school students from Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics and Frederick Douglass Academy to attend. In addition, I facilitated weekly workshops on leadership development, service learning, local and global issues and group dynamics with the goal of developing students' leadership skills, local and global awareness and social skills. 

As part of fulfilling buildOn's mission, 3 of my students participated in buildOn's Malawi's Trek For Knowledge; an experimental learning opportunity to participate in the building of an international school. 

As a result of my work, student civic engagement hours increased from 1096 (2011-2012) to 1636 (2012-2013) (49% increase) at Manhattan Center For Science and Mathematics and from 1420 (2011-2012) to 1640 (2012-2013) (15% increase) at Frederick Douglass Academy. I also served on the Staff Appreciation Committee and Adult Volunteer Committee.

What I am most proud of during my term of service are the mentoring relationships I have fostered with my students and contributing to their social, personal and leadership development.
