    Dirk Hays is a prominent figure in the field of plant sciences, with a focus on ideotype breeding in crops like wheat, sorghum, cowpea, cassava, and forages. His projects primarily target improved abiotic stress tolerance and nutrition, as well as biotic stress tolerance.

    In his academic role, Dirk teaches graduate Plant Physiology within the Molecular and Environmental Plant Sciences Program, and also engages in teaching undergraduate Crop Stress Management at the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences.

    At Texas A&M University, Dirk holds the position of Chair in the Molecular and Environmental Plant Sciences Program, overseeing various academic and research activities within the department.

    With a strong commitment to mentorship, Dirk serves as a major advisor for a significant number of M.S. or Ph.D. students on an annual basis, guiding and supporting the next generation of plant scientists.

    Dirk Hays pursued his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Plant Physiology at the University of Calgary, building a strong foundation in the core principles of plant biology. He also completed a Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry at Texas A&M University, honing his expertise in the biochemical aspects of plant life.

    Previously, Dirk held the prestigious position of Center Director and Professor at the Texas A&M Agrilife Research and Extension Center in Weslaco, where he made significant contributions to the field of agriculture and plant sciences.
