Derrick Sorweide

Derrick J. Sorweide, DO, FACOFP, is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Medical Director of Healthcare Simulation at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific-Northwest (COMP-Northwest).1 He is a distinguished osteopathic physician with a diverse background in medicine, military service, and education.

Dr. Sorweide received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency in family medicine at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center and Dallas Southwest Medical Center.1 Before joining COMP-Northwest as a founding faculty member in 2012, he ran a private practice in Grants Pass, Oregon for 16 years.12

In addition to his academic role, Dr. Sorweide serves in the United States Army Reserve.3 He joined the military in 2016 and has been deployed to various locations, including Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, and Honduras.1 Currently, he holds the position of Command Surgeon for the 2nd Medical Brigade of the U.S. Army Reserve, overseeing all medical military personnel in six western states.1

Dr. Sorweide is known for his commitment to medical education and his passion for austere medicine. He advises several student clubs, including the Military Medicine Club and the Wilderness Medicine Club, where he shares his experiences and knowledge with aspiring physicians.1

His contributions to the field have been recognized, as evidenced by his recent selection as Grand Marshall of the Linn County Veterans Day parade, though he was unable to attend due to deployment in Iraq.1
