Emergency Medicine MD and Medical Toxicologist

Working full-time in the Emergency Department, I continue to have high productivity, routinely within the top 5 RVU/hour within the physician group. My overall department management is also excellent, with my time-to-disposition averaging up to 1 hour faster than the group. Within Vituity, I produced the quarterly Toxicology journal review CME. For San Mateo Medical Center, as part of a committee, I produced the Scarce Resource Allocation Policy.

This experience included daily supervision and review of all in-hospital consultations performed by the California Poison Control System (CPCS) - San Francisco Division. Teaching included daily case rounds with rotating medical students, pharmacy students, and emergency medicine residents with informal lectures. Formal lectures for medical students rotating in the emergency department were done monthly.  Bimonthly teaching cases were presented to all divisions of the CPCS.

My tenure at San Francisco General Hospital was most notable for an exceptionally diverse and productive clinical and professional experience. Clinically, my productivity was the highest within the physician group. Per hour, I treated 20% more patients than the median (with a negative patient signout differential of 1) and producing the highest RVU/hour (except for the nocturnist). My research productivity was also exceptional, yielding 16 publications (selected cited below) without departmental support. I was a strong clinical teacher: my overall scores (on a 5-point scale) improved from 3.44 to 4.08 among medical students and 3.60 to 3.91 among residents. Compared to the faculty group, these improvements were 490% and 220% larger, respectively. These improvements manifested in the faculty bedside teaching award for the 4th academic quarter of 2014-15, voted on by the residents. Additionally, I contributed to my department and the university through various committees: Medication Utilization & Safety, Chemical & Environmental Safety, and Emergency Department Rebuild in preparation for our transition to a new emergency department. I started the Medical Toxicology consult service at San Francisco General Hospital in 2012 which included creating a documentation template, and establishing a billing and collections mechanism.
