Derek Spratt
Executive Chairman at Turnium Technology Group
Derek Spratt is a seasoned professional with a rich background in the technology sector, currently serving as the Executive Chairman of Turnium Technology Group and a board member of BC Discovery Fund.
With a career spanning several decades, Derek began his journey as a mobile products engineering manager at Motorola, where he played a key role in developing 1st generation public network mobile computing devices in the 1980s.
During the 1990s, he ventured into entrepreneurship by founding and managing two wireless tech companies, PCS Wireless (pioneering micro-cells, a precursor to WiFi networks) and Intrinsyc Software (focused on IoT solutions).
In addition to his entrepreneurial endeavors, Derek has also been actively involved in various investment and advisory roles. He contributed to the growth of BC Advantage Funds, served on the board of several tech firms, and advised prominent venture capital entities like Quorum Fund and Bessemer Venture Partners.
Derek's leadership skills were further evident during his tenure as the CEO of Mobidia, a mobile app analytics company that was eventually acquired by App Annie.
Moreover, he served as a Partner and Managing Director at ScaleUP Ventures, a venture capital firm backed by corporate Canada, from 2016 to 2019.
Throughout his career, Derek has been recognized with numerous business awards, including BIV 40 under 40 CEOs, Deloitte Fast 50 and Fast 500, BC Business Tech 100, and National Post's Fastest Growing Tech Company in Canada.
Apart from his professional achievements, Derek has been actively engaged in various community initiatives and served on the board of organizations like Social Venture Partners, BC Science World, and the Scientist in Residence Program, emphasizing his commitment to social responsibility and education.
Derek Spratt's educational background includes studies in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Queen's University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology, underpinning his technical expertise and understanding of the industry.
Together with his spouse Cheryl, Derek has built a strong family foundation, raising three grown children and sharing their home with two Burmese cats.
