In Uganda, where 80% of the market is in the informal sector, it’s a huge challenge to find legitimate service providers and in general there is a lack of transparency and lack of information, especially since so few people have an online presence.

Ubuntu Capital is creating a platform that markets vetted and legitimate local enterprises in Kampala. The platform gives the service providers an online presence, access to customers, and ability to grow.

True to a start up, my tasks and responsibilities include anything that comes up and cover a variety of territory. My tasks and responsibility include, but are not limited to product development,  research about two sided market places, competitors and general market research, customer and service provider acquisition, due diligence on service providers, reporting and content design.

Haverford College offers externships over breaks. I did a remote externship with Eleanor Tabi Haller-Jorden who is the President & CEO of The Paradigm Forum GmbH, a global consultancy and think tank operating at the intersection of social justice and workplace innovation. I did research for them about the workspace and how the environment to be cultivated to promote certain values or goals.

Working full time in admissions at Haverford means giving tours to perspective students and hosting students and their families in the admissions office. Communicating Haverford's identity and values is key to the job as is simply having a lot of knowledge about the institution to answer people's questions. The job required a lot of public speaking for tours as well general communications skills.

In this position, I give a comprehensive tour of Philadelphia that includes history, culture, anecdotes, humor and more! Additionally, with grant money from the Hurford Center for Arts and Humanities and the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship at Haverford College, I have developed my own Social Justice Bike Tour of Philadelphia.

I was hired to run the women's initiative of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. I run the programming of the initiative. My primary goal for this internship has been making the program as inclusive as possible. In addition to our regularly occurring programming such as coffee club, happy hours, urban riding basics classes, and socially paced rides, I planned an event that engaged with the intersection of race and transit called Black Lives Matter, Bikes and Transportation Justice. In addition to that event I created an event called Bike Stories that invited people to share their experiences biking. This event prioritized voices of folks who are POC or LGBTQ. In addition to these events I opened dialogues on the facebook page (containing over 2,500 people) about race and transit and also trans issues. I created a code of conduct for the page to make it a safer space for people who don't identify as white cis-women. I pushed for less gendered language on the page (saying hey everyone instead of hey ladies). In addition to general running of the program, creating monthly newsletters, promoting events, doing programming, ordering merchandise, managing donations, I put my value-based Haverford education, my interest in multiculturalism represented through my language major, my passion for social justice demonstrated through my PJHR concentration, and so much of what I learned during my gap year to use all through the medium of bikes and biking.

During my internship with MLUI in the summer of 2014, I was exposed to bike advocacy and programming surrounding access to sustainable and affordable alternative transportation options. I became passionate about how transportation, particularly bicycling, could be a source of empowerment, address public health concerns, and address environmental issues. I came back to Haverford the fall of my Sophomore year and through a project in my Case Studies in Environmental Issues class, my peers and I wrote a comprehensive proposal to start a bike share at Haverford and increase infrastructure in the surrounding area. This is still in the process of being approved, but I became very interested in transportation. I decided to take a year off from Haverford and move to Portland, Oregon to learn more about transportation. I interned with a non profit called Community Cycling Center. CCC is a non profit with the mission of addressing the obstacles of access to bicycling and its benefits for undeserved communities. As communications intern, I covered the non profit's programming by photographing and writing about them. Additionally, I provided support for their programming. This entailed working closely with very diverse communities in Portland.
After December 2015, I shifted into a programming intern role where I supported the organization's collaborative projects. I worked with high schoolers that we were doing elective workshops with and the latino community and their organizing around bike promotion.

In this position, I managed all social media (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Pintrest) and used social media in innovative ways to engage new audiences to promote studying abroad with Sant'Anna Institute in Sorrento. I produced visual media marketing material for the program website highlighting the unique features of the program and the opportunities of studying abroad in Sorrento, Italy with Sant'Anna Institute. SA is an Italian company and the staff is all Italian and the language used in the office is Italian.

In the spring of 2015 I participated in a workshop series with the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship at Haverford College called Reading Philadelphia Field Study. This workshop series covered a variety of topics from homelessness to gentrification to monuments that all delved into ideas of public spaces how they are affected by power dynamics that limit or extend accessibility of a space for certain groups of people.
I pursued learning more about the identity of Philadelphia and it's public spaces by working with a professor at Haverford, Paul Farber, who curates the Monument Lab. At the Monument Lab I engaged with people in the City Hall courtyard and asked them to design their own monument asking the driving question: What is an appropriate monument for the current city of Philadelphia? The aim of the project is to start a dialogue about the identity of Philly in this transitional moment where Philly is undergoing intense urban renewal, but continues to face severe problems including poverty, hunger and a suffering public education system. Additionally, I took pictures at the monument lab, kept the work space organized and helped with marketing for the project.

MLUI works in three major areas of community development and promotion of environmental and economic values: Transportation, energy and food.

For transportation, I learned about transportation in TC and wrote articles about transportation generally. I attended the Smart Commute week in TC sponsored by TART trails. I helped promote the weeks events, photographed them and wrote articles about the week. I also provided photographs for a report about getting rail in TC. Additionally, I wrote an article about the BATA bus system in TC.

For energy, I got extremely involved in a campaign to get a pipeline out of the Mackinac straits which included doing PR for events in the area, attending events and covering them in articles and photographing them. Additionally, I worked as a PA (production assistant) on the set of a commercial that MLUI produced to raise awareness about the pipeline and its dangers. Additionally, I worked with the grant reports and attended meetings with the coalition team.

For food and farming, I wrote a weekly "Pick of the Week"​ article where I chose a local ingredient, made a dish out of it and wrote about the experience. Additionally, I helped with PR for the MLUI Taste the Local Difference campaign. Also, I wrote, shot and edited a film about the value of a farmer's market.

In addition to working in these three areas and doing those projects, I also helped with development by making stewardship calls, sending out communications about giving, and helping plan and run fundraising events. I also did data work with Civi.

As the development intern at AFS, my responsibilities primary included fundraising through calls and letters, planning and helping run stewardship events, writing and sending out communications, working with social media, organizing facilities and data work with Raiser's Edge (Blackbaud product).
