My research focuses on estimating secondary production using the fundamental principles of ecosystem structure outlined by the biomass spectra theory. Marine pelagic food webs are largely size-structured, and because ecological rates (i.e., growth, mortality, energy transfer, etc.) scale with size, secondary production can be estimated using normalized biomass size spectra (NBSS). I am currently working on combining zooplankton net-samples with multi-frequency acoustics data collected by DFO on the Line P and LaPerouse voyages to estimate secondary production.

My Master's thesis focused on quantifying active carbon transport from the surface of the ocean to the mesopelagic zone via vertical migrations of macrozooplankton and micronekton. The aim of this research is to produce a biomass/production size dependent model based on the Biomass Spectra Theory that can be applied to large scale estimates of active carbon flux, to improve the understanding of global carbon export. As a Marine Scientist, I have worked on a variety of projects including LNG terminals, Pipelines and Ports. Specifically, I was involved in developing and executing marine field surveys, crew leading field programs (intertidal surveys, subtidal surveys, marine mammal surveys), writing technical data reports and environmental assessments, submitting and responding to information requests (IRs) during the EA process, developing and writing habitat offsetting plans, and working with First Nations assistants and subcontractors. I also participated in eelgrass transplant programs and have lead and participated in the development of standard operating procedures.

I began as a co-op student at Stantec Consulting before being hired on as a full time employee. During this time, I was given the opportunity to work on a variety of different projects which involved conducting baseline, or follow-up surveys in the marine environment. Surveys examined marine species and habitat in the intertidal and subtidal zones. Intertidal surveys involved documenting species abundance/presence, substrate classification, ground truthing BC CRIMS data, and conducting eelgrass surveys. Subtidal surveys involved working with remotely operated vehicle (ROV) subcontractors, and identifying species presence and abunance, documenting substrate type and the presence and absence of woody or human debris in the subtidal zone. Each survey outlined all ecologically significant species. During this work term I also authored small scale technical reports on the data obtained during field studies, as well as literature reviews of specific invertebrate and fish species occurring within a project footprint. I also worked with EndNote, and created project specific libraries, allowing the team to quickly track down references when needed for specific projects.
