    Schaus is also known for his role as a whistleblower in the "Fat Leonard" scandal. In the mid-2000s, while running the Navy's Ship Support Office in Hong Kong, he noticed that Glenn Defense Marine Asia (GDMA) was overcharging the Navy.3 He reported these issues to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), but his superiors told him to back off.3 Despite facing threats and social isolation, Schaus persisted in pressing for an investigation.23
