David Bigio
Department Head - Biomedical Engineering at University of the Andes
David Bigio is a seasoned Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience in various industries. He has a strong interest in developing innovative technologies aimed at positively impacting society, particularly in the medical devices field. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Biomedical/Medical Engineering from Universidad de Los Andes, where he has also taught Innovation and Entrepreneurship of medical devices.
David started his career at Schlumberger, where he worked for many years in different global positions. Here he gained invaluable experience in the oil field services industry and developed advanced technologies. David has also worked with HP labs in Silicon Valley, where he led ventures related to internet-based technologies. He later joined GE and created a division for products dedicated to defense. As Director Latin America at GE Homeland Protection and Director Latin America at Morpho Detection, Inc for several years, he gained knowledge and experience in the commercial and government sector.
In addition to this extensive experience, David has also served as former VP of Strategic Projects for Phoenix Packaging Group and Director General at Biomaster Medical. He has developed devices to assist orthopaedic surgeons to prevent infection during TKA and created a device to assist with dermoabrasion for burned patients.
David’s technical expertise, leadership skills, and vast experience make him a valuable addition to a team with interests in sustainable and positive innovation in healthcare.
