Daniel Bear

Dr. Daniel Bear is a Professor of Criminal Justice at Humber College in Toronto, Canada, and the Director of the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) at Humber.13 He specializes in drugs policy research, focusing on cannabis, harm reduction, and the policing of drugs and community policing practices.24

Dr. Bear joined Humber College in 2015 as a professor in the Bachelor of Social Science, Criminal Justice program.1 He holds a PhD and MSc in Social Policy from The London School of Economics and Political Science, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.15

As a researcher, Dr. Bear is the Canadian lead for the Global Cannabis Cultivation Research Consortium, which studies small-scale cannabis cultivation across 18 countries.1 He is currently the Principal Investigator on two funded research projects: an NSERC-funded project on engaging young-adult cannabis consumers and an ATRP grant focusing on cannabis education for pharmacists.1

Dr. Bear has 20 years of experience in advocacy, research, and consulting in the field of drug policy.3 He is also involved in public education initiatives, such as the "Weed Out Misinformation" campaign, which aims to provide accurate information about cannabis based on harm reduction and benefit maximization principles.2

In his role as Director of the Centre for Social Innovation at Humber College, which he assumed on August 21, 2023, Dr. Bear collaborates with various committees and teams to meet the Centre's goals and further social innovation initiatives.1
