Dr. Dain Kavars is the Executive Director of the Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities. He assumed this role on July 1, 2021, after previously serving as the Associate Director of Academic Affairs.2
Education and Background
Dr. Kavars holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Minnesota and a B.S. in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Iowa.1 His academic journey has equipped him with a strong foundation in the sciences, particularly in astronomy and physics.
Career at Indiana Academy
Dr. Kavars joined the Indiana Academy in 2006 as a faculty member, teaching Solar System Astronomy and Galactic Astronomy classes.1 His role expanded over the years, and in 2015, he became the Associate Director of Academic Affairs. In this position, he was responsible for:
- Working with parents and students on 504 and IEP special education plans
- Overseeing student attendance

As a graduate student, Dr. Kavars focused on radio astronomy, utilizing one of the world's largest radio telescopes, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia.1 This background in research contributes to his comprehensive understanding of scientific methodologies and practices.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Kavars is a science enthusiast, an avid reader of science fiction and fantasy, and enjoys geocaching. He has set a personal goal to hike all of Indiana's state parks.3
