Charles Woods

Dr. Charles Woods is a seasoned Professor and Chairman for the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Miles College with an extensive background in higher education.

With a Ph.D in Environmental Microbiology from Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, Dr. Woods is skilled in various areas such as Nonprofit Organizations, Editing, Curriculum Development, Fundraising, and Program Development.

His proficiency in business development and his dedication to restructuring the Science Program at Miles College are evident from the grants exceeding $6.0 million that he has written or collaborated on.

Recognized for his excellence in teaching, Dr. Woods was voted Teacher of the Year by the students at Miles College in both 1998 and 2019, and awarded the University of West Alabama Alumni Achievement Award in 2002.

Having served as a Patricia Roberts Harris and Department of Energy Fellow, Dr. Woods has a rich research background, including work with the Environmental Management Career Opportunities for Minorities program and collaborations with various prestigious institutions like Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.

Dr. Woods' current research interests chiefly revolve around bioremediation, particularly in the domain of phytoremediation using indigenous plant/microbial systems.
