Cathy Edwards
VP Engineering at Google
Cathy Edwards is a VP of Engineering at Google, currently leading Google Apps, News, Discover, and ecosystem efforts.14 She has over 15 years of experience working in search technology.2 Edwards co-founded and was the CTO of app search engine Chomp, which was acquired by Apple for $50 million in 2012.3 She later founded Undecidable Labs, which was acquired by Google in 2016.3
Edwards studied linguistics, computer science, and pure mathematics at the University of Western Australia.3 Her career includes roles at Telstra, 3jam, Friendster, Apple, and Google.13 At Apple, she served as the Head of Search for iTunes, the App Store, and Maps before becoming Director of Evaluation and Quality for Maps.3
As of November 2023, Edwards was the VP of Search at Google, where she worked on new search features including a personalized experience called Follow and a labs product called Notes.5 However, recent news indicates that Edwards is moving back to Australia and will join Google's Long-term Bets team to help incubate new product ideas.46
Edwards is also a single mother by choice of three children and recently moved back to Perth after two decades away.2
