Carmen Berkley

Carmen Berkley is the Vice President of Programs at the Group Health Foundation, where she focuses on advancing health equity in Washington State. With over 15 years of experience in advocacy, political strategy, grantmaking, and organizational development, she has dedicated her career to addressing the barriers faced by Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) leaders in accessing resources and support.14

Professional Background

Before joining the Group Health Foundation, Carmen served as the Chief Strategy Officer at Dancing Hearts Consulting, a firm specializing in social and political impact initiatives aimed at ending inequality. She also held the position of Managing Director for the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, overseeing a $50 million portfolio and leading a team of 50 people.135 Her experience includes roles with notable organizations such as the AFL-CIO and the United States Student Association, where she worked on civil rights and advocacy efforts.46

Advocacy and Philosophy

Carmen's advocacy is deeply influenced by her personal experiences. After undergoing emergency brain surgery due to inadequate medical care, she became passionate about fighting for equitable treatment in healthcare systems. She believes that those directly impacted by systemic issues have the best insights into how to create effective solutions.4 Carmen emphasizes the importance of listening to communities to understand their needs and aspirations better.5

Personal Life

In addition to her professional work, Carmen is also known for her creative pursuits as a DJ under the name CarmenSpindiego, showcasing her love for music and cultural expression. She resides in Bellevue, Washington, with her husband Lee and their dog King T’Challa.24
