Nelson has served in various capacities, including Division Director of Planning and Regional Services at Central Texas Council of Governments, Director of Public Safety Programs at Texas Association of Regional Councils, Safety Specialist, Public Safety Officer, Safety Manager, and other roles at institutions such as the State of Missouri, The University of Texas at Austin, and Vanderbilt University. He has also worked as a Lieutenant with the LaVergne Fire Department and was a former Petty Officer 3rd Class with the US Coast Guard.
