Partnerships and Community Manager - Understanding Patient Data, Wellcome Trust

I am part of a team which builds and supports the patient data community across the UK, bringing the voices and perspectives of more diverse communities into important debates about how our health data is used. I'm responsible for involving stakeholders including patient groups, health professionals, data holders, policymakers and the media in our work.

My role involves establishing relationships with a wide range of individuals and organisations, understanding what UPD can offer them and what needs, questions or concerns about data use they have. I also identify potential collaborative projects across partners and manage them through to delivery, creating and sharing models of good practice for others to build on. I put a particular emphasis on minoritised groups and those who are typically not well represented in existing research and collaborations on data use.

Since 2007 I have worked as a consultant, largely in the Higher Education and Healthcare sectors, on Equality and Diversity issues, with a particular focus on LGB, Gender identity/Trans and Gender equality issues.
I have provided training, consultancy and policy development to a large number of returning and regular clients including: Wellcome Trust, LIPA, Kings College London, Birkbeck College, Cardiff University, University of Oxford, Plymouth University, Learning and Skills Improvement Service, Lifelong Learning UK, HEEON, The European Council, The Royal Free Hospital Trust and The Government Equalities Office.

Equality and Diversity Consultant

I provided advice and support to the Mayor's Office on matters relating to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, particularly in relation to the needs and experiences of LGBT people. I supported the building of relationships and connections between the Mayor's Office and the LGBT community and voluntary sector.

I also recommended and supported engagement events to the Mayor's Office, helping to facilitate a session in Summer 2019 where LGBTQ+ young people of colour were convened to feed into the Mayor's strategies, and more recently co-organising and hosting a half-day conference and learning session on the subject of LGBTQ+ women's health as part of LBT Women's Health Week (March 2020). This conference brought together individuals who work diversely across health, wellbeing and community to both learn more and to share their views and asks with the Mayor's Office.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group Member

I provided trans community and LGBT+ sector insight for the board and used this to help shape the work that the board is doing to improve transition-related healthcare across the country.

My role included supporting the development of service specifications and undertaking national commissioning processes. I have additionally run the community in-reach and in person elements of the consultations around both the service specifications (2018) and the proposed pilot projects (2019).

Independent Member, Gender Identity Programme Board

This role involved joining the Trust at a time where Equality, Diversity and Inclusion were not firmly on the agenda and building relationships and trust to allow for new initiatives and activity to begin.

The role included developing evidence-based organisational strategy, including through staff engagement; working with data to identify trends and develop remedial measures and/or scale up successful interventions; and acting as an expert advisor to the SMT and Board on matters of equality, diversity and inclusion.

During my time at Whittington I set up their staff Equality and Inclusion Network and their (Step Up) Inclusion Champions programme. I facilitated their first attendance at Pride in London and provided tailored EDI training to departments which required improvement as evidenced by submissions to PALS.

The National LGB&T Partnership is an England-wide group of LGB&T voluntary and community organisations who are committed to reducing the health inequalities of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans communities and to challenging homophobia, biphobia and transphobia within public services.

The National LGB&T Partnership is one of 21 Strategic Partners funded by the Department of Health, NHS England and Public Health England as part of their Health and Wellbeing Alliance.

My role is
To develop the relationships required (across the health system, government and the LGBT+ and wider VCSE) to ensure LGBT+ concerns are mainstreamed across health and social care;
To lead projects which design and test interventions and system change to improve care and support for LGBT+ people
To identify, design, oversee and/or create and disseminate a range of tools and resources to inform and support local, regional and national stakeholders;
To manage stakeholder relationship development and communications;
To undertake research and consultation with LGBT+ communities, developing this into briefings and reports to system stakeholders;
To run campaigns, events and activities to share knowledge and intelligence about LGBT+ health inequalities.

I manage and run the national campaign 'LBT Women's Health Week'. Among many other activities and events, In 2019 I arranged the first ever discussion of LGB women's health on BBC Woman's Hour, and in 2020 my work has led to the scheduling of the first ever debate on LGBTQ+ women's health in the House of Commons.
