Bryan Epps is a dedicated community leader and a passionate advocate for social justice. With a rich background rooted in Newark, New Jersey, Bryan has spent his career working relentlessly to address systemic issues affecting underserved communities. Currently, he serves with Equal Justice USA, where he is actively transforming the justice system by developing trauma-informed responses to violence. Before his impactful work at Equal Justice USA, Bryan was the Executive Director at The Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center, where he played a vital role in honoring the legacy of Malcolm X through educational programming and community engagement efforts.
From the onset of his career as a Community Greening Coordinator at Greater Newark Conservancy, Bryan has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life in urban areas. He initiated the development and construction of seven urban parks, showcasing his innovative approaches to community enhancement. His career took an influential turn when he joined Mayor Cory A. Booker's administration in 2008, focusing on performance analysis for the City’s Department of Economic Housing and Workforce Development. His work there significantly contributed to improving data utilization within city government, impacting the culture and operations of Newark’s administration.
Education and Achievements
Bryan's educational foundation is exemplary, underscoring his commitment to social sciences and community development. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in History from Rutgers University, where he also minored in African Studies and Anthropology. This richly diversified educational background provided him with a deep understanding of historical contexts and social dynamics that inform his current work.
Bryan furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Science in Urban Policy Analysis and Management from The New School, specializing in finance and environmental community development. This advanced degree enabled him to sharpen his analytical skills and apply them effectively within the urban policy landscape.
Beyond his academic credentials, Bryan’s commitment to social justice and community leadership is reflected in his extensive volunteer work with various nonprofit organizations. His role as the first Board Chair of People’s Prep High School not only highlights his leadership abilities but also his dedication to preparing young people for successful college careers. As the Founding Board Advisory Chair of HMI-NJ, he worked tirelessly to create safe spaces for LGBTQ youth in New Jersey, demonstrating his commitment to inclusivity and equality.
