MacCleery served as Principal Architect and Chief Engineer in development of the NI Inverter Test System (ITS) for real-time simulation of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (EVTOL) aircraft. The new Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) test system enables embedded control computers for electric vehicles to be rigorously tested using feedback signals from the simulator that mimic real-world sensor feedback. A new software and driver architecture was developed by MacCleery and team for the NI PXIe platform. This enables accurate real-time simulation of the coupled dynamic interactions of high-speed electromagnetic phenomenon between electric vehicle motor-generators, power electronics converters, and battery packs. By reducing latency, the new architecture enables vehicle simulation models to span between ultra-high speed FPGA devices and lower speed but more flexible CPUs running the Linux Real-Time OS. This allows for accurate co-simulation of complex EV and EVTOL models in which coupled differential equations span between the FPGA solvers (transient inverter and motor models) and CPU solvers (vehicle dynamics models from 3 to 6 Degrees-Of-Freedom (DOF), including battery pack, mechanical powertrain and aerodynamic models). The new architecture enables microsecond level latency for closed loop FPGA-CPU communication, jitter reductions to make Linux Real-Time more of a hard real-time OS, and new inter-process communication protocols with support for Virtual ECU test requirements. In Virtual ECU test, many Electronic Control Units (ECUs) interact over serial communication protocols and this is simulated in real-time for algorithm development and testing purposes, along with the physics models of the vehicle itself. MacCleery worked with talented engineers across the company to bring the new capabilities to the NI PXIe platform and personally developed large portions of the NI Inverter Test System (ITS) software stack.

• With colleagues Rahul Kulkarni and Nipun Mathur, developed the "NI LabVIEW-SolidWorks Mechatronics Alpha Toolkit" to enable machine designers to perform realistic motion control simulations and create low risk virtual prototypes from within the 3D CAD environment.
