Boris Kovatchev
Boris Kovatchev is a renowned expert in diabetes technology, with over 25 years of experience in mathematical modeling and computing. As a professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and founding Director of the UVA Center for Diabetes Technology, he has been instrumental in the development and clinical testing of closed-loop control and advisory systems for diabetes. His numerous accolades include the U.S. Diabetes Technology Leadership Award, UVA's Edlich-Henderson Inventor of the Year, and JDRF's Gerold and Kayla Grodsky Award for outstanding scientific contributions to diabetes research.
Kovatchev holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Mathematical Statistics and Probability from the Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski in Bulgaria. He has authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications and has 38 U.S. and international patents to his name, with numerous pending patent applications. He is also a member of the editorial boards of the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering and the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology.
Prior to his work at UVA, Kovatchev co-founded TypeZero Technologies LLC, where he served as the Chief Mathematician. In his current role, he leads several large-scale projects dedicated to reducing the risk of hypoglycemia and improving glucose variability control. His work has the potential to revolutionize the way people with diabetes manage their condition, enhancing their quality of life and reducing complications.
