Bob Mumgaard
Driving toward a fusion-powered future
Bob Mumgaard is the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS).123 In his role as CEO, Mumgaard is responsible for the strategic vision and direction of the company, with the goal of paving the way for a future of clean, unlimited fusion energy.12
Mumgaard co-founded CFS with the mission to commercialize the high-field approach to fusion.16 Since 2018, he has grown the company to over 800 employees and raised over $2 billion from leading investors.1346 CFS is a private commercial fusion company with a scientifically-validated path to commercialization.1 In 2021, Commonwealth Fusion raised $1.8 billion, which was the largest funding round ever by a Massachusetts company.5
Prior to co-founding CFS, Mumgaard was an MIT fellow where he concentrated on how entrepreneurship, risk-retirement strategies, and partnerships could accelerate fusion's progression from the laboratory to the market.124 He led a team to identify strategies for utilizing private finance and traditional academic resources to speed up fusion energy, which resulted in a collaboration model with MIT.1
Mumgaard holds a PhD in Applied Plasma Physics and a MS in Nuclear Engineering from MIT, as well as BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Physics from the University of Nebraska.1345 During his PhD work at MIT, he contributed to the design of several small superconducting tokamaks using high-temperature superconductors (HTS).124
