Observability nerd, co-creator of OpenTelemetry, co-founder of Lightstep
Ben Sigelman has built a career around software introspection and observability in large distributed systems, starting his journey at Google where he contributed to projects like Dapper and Monarch. In 2015, he co-founded Lightstep, a venture that he found to be a rewarding experience due to the exceptional team and inspiring customers. During his time at Lightstep, he played a pivotal role in creating OpenTracing, later evolving into OpenTelemetry, with a key focus on community support. In 2021, Lightstep was acquired by ServiceNow, where Ben served as the General Manager for the observability business for three years, bridging cutting-edge cloud-native software with the robustness of ServiceNow deployments for major corporations.
Ben Sigelman holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science from Brown University. With a background as the former Co-founder and CEO of Lightstep, VP and GM of Cloud Observability at ServiceNow, mentor, and advisor at Code for America, as well as a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Google, he has accumulated a wealth of experience in software development, leadership, and fostering community-driven initiatives in the tech industry.
